CSX TRANSFLO is an Important Link in Carbon-saving Biodiesel Supply Chain
Vegetable oils, animal fats and recycled restaurant grease might not sound like the ingredients of a clean fuel solution, but they are increasingly important to a carbon-reduction strategy that CSX is helping make possible.
These readily available, renewable ingredients are the feed stocks of biodiesel fuel, which reduces carbon emissions by more than 50% compared to petroleum-based diesel.
CSX is further contributing to the environmental advantages of biodiesel fuel by providing a low-emissions, rail-based solution for carrying the raw materials as well as the finished product. That solution is CSX TRANSFLO, which offers railcar-to-truck and truck-to-railcar transloading services at more than 45 terminals on the 20,000-mile CSX rail network.
TRANSFLO adds to the sustainability of the biodiesel fuel strategy by allowing shippers to capture the environmental advantages of rail for the long-haul portion of transporting product, then delivering the “last mile” by truck. Rail transportation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% to 80% compared to trucking.
Because biodiesel fuel meets both the biomass-based diesel and overall advanced biofuel requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Renewable Fuel Standard, it is growing in importance as a component of the nation’s climate strategy.
Supporting the growth of biodiesel fuel is one more way CSX and TRANSFLO are contributing to a safer, cleaner supply chain across America.
